I loved this compilation of stories. My least favorite is Colin Channer's story , I just could not get into it. I loved the other 3 stories , they all seemed so real and they grabbed my attention. In between work and school , it was a great book to balance. I know this book is over 15 years old and I am just getting into E. L Harris books so I am doing all the catching up that I can !

Got to be Real Four Original Love Stories Lynn Harris Eric Jerome Dickey Marcus Major Colin Channer 9780451202239 Books Reviews

I preordered this novel when I heard several of my favorite authors had come together for this compilation. This book had four different love stories that were written by four very different writers. Each story reflected their differences. Oh, what wonderful stories they were.
Eric Jerome Dickey's story is a departure from his usual humorous and crafty dialogue. It is well written and the dialogue is great, but avid Dickey fans will immediately read the difference.
Marcus Major's story is the love story of Kenya and Amir. I actually read Good Peoples before this compilation, so you know I was scratching my head until I realize that it was the prequel to Good Peoples. Major writes beautifully and he has a way of making you laugh and cry at the same time.
All I can say about E. Lynn Harris' story, is Thank Goodness! He has returned to writing in the style that I became accustomed to when I read his very first novel. A love story with heart. The love scenes have returned to this story, because in most of his recent novels he has tamed them down, but not in this story. I loved this story.
Those who know me, know I love anything written by Colin Channer. I find his writing profound, beautiful, and rich with descriptive phrases. He can turn a phrase into its most eloquent form. His writing is so classy and eclectic. His style is so different and yet so awe inspiring. When I read anything by him, he transports me into the story where I feel his words. I feel the heat he has generated. I just feel.
This compilation of short stories is a wonderful way to inspire your own love story. Wonderful!
Each writer who contributed to the anthology has a distinctive and perceptive voice and they all lend themselves well to the literary flavor of Got to Be Real.
E. Lynn Harris does a marvelous job with Money Can't Buy Me Love. As usual, his writing is sensitive, funny, engaging, and shocking. Harris always delves into areas that might not be common knowledge as far as non-heterosexual relationships, yet the required emotional bond is there pain, love, fear, and hope, so readers should be able to identify with this moving and memorable story; one that made me sad to see it end.
Marcus Major heaps more of his hilarious writing with Kenya and Amir. He has a fine flair for male/female relationship issues and tackles them with much humor and sophistication. Major's writing gets better and better, and if you enjoyed Good Peoples, you should also love this novella.
In Cafe Piel, Eric Dickey throws us a curve. What? No L.A. streets and freeways? Not exactly. This time he shows us that love and longing can happen even in the most foreign places (Mexico). The story includes some mad drama, and as a warning, you'd better brush up on your Spanish because the love connection here takes place between a brother and a woman whose English ain't so great, but her ability to captivate the main character, Bobby Davis, is what counts the most, so it seems.
Colin Channer is like a word master. His words took me places I've never been before. His writing is thoughtful and detailed, and his story is a like a ride through the park on a leisurely Sunday afternoon.
All in all the stories were wonderfully written, a must have for any collector of African-American stories at its grandest.
I listened to the audiobook although I know I would've enjoyed reading the physical book. I am not a fan of short stories, but I can say that I truly enjoyed the stories in this compilation. They were quite entertaining. I am a fan of EJD, E Lynn Harris, and Marcus Major. This is the first book I have encountered by Colin Channer. Although the stories were considered short, they were very detailed. I was left wanting to know what happened to the characters in the stories. Each story was unique and had likeable characters. I really enjoyed the voice of the narrator who read Colin Channer's book. He was Jamaican and I loved his accent. Good Old School African American Fiction.
The book was a great reader!
I did not read Lynn Harris, but I loved the others. Eric Jerome Dickey is one of my favorite writers.. He has an amazing way with words. His stories always make me think.. Colin Chandler, amd Marcus Major are authors I will read in the future. Great book.
These short stories are exactly the 'fluff' one needs for Summer reading! Romantic stories for an audience that thirst for a little, old fashioned "soap opera" to their literary mix. I primarily got this for E. Lynn Harris (story is great!) but the others are up to par. Again, great Summer 'fluff' read.
This book was a fair read.
The stories by Mr. E. Lynn Harris and Mr. Eric Jerome Dickey, were the best stories of this book in my opinion.
And even though, the story titled, "Kenya & Amir" by Mr. Marcus Major was a little unnecessarily lengthy, I really liked it.
These characters were definitely REAL!
I loved this compilation of stories. My least favorite is Colin Channer's story , I just could not get into it. I loved the other 3 stories , they all seemed so real and they grabbed my attention.
