Cristo is a man used to harsh rejection. His parents kicked him out of the house for being bisexual at 16. His uncle beat him repeatedly. Years later, his beloved master, Landry, broke his monogamy promise, giving Cris a 'my way or the highway' ultimatum, rejecting Cris' love and jettisoning him from his life completely. 6 years later, Cris has rebuilt his life for the 3rd time, finding love with Tilly. He gets a cry for help for his dying-alone master. He makes the impossible choice to leave Tilly abruptly in order to save Landry's life. Cris has to keep his relationship with Tilly a secret because he couldn't risk Landry refusing his life-saving help if he found out and objected to her. Given Landry's history of ultimatums, this is a logical assumption with devastating consequences.

But secrets have a way of coming out.

Years later, Tilly has donned the fierce persona of a Domme and doesn't make herself vulnerable to anyone. Until Landry enters with a proposition. He's just learned about her relationship with Cris. He wants to atone for his role in taking Cris out of her life and offer her a chance for sweet revenge. She agrees to work as a team to punish Cris.

The emotional, psychological and at times physical punishments are about half of the book. It's difficult to read. You won't find compassion for Cris. You'll find guilt because Tilly knows they crossed the line and abused a vulnerable and isolated man. But it's that guilt that allows her to see him as a person. Landry punishes Cris because he enjoys it and because he's using it as a strategy to soften Tilly's heart.

As the bond between Landry and Tilly grows, as the pleasure in punishing Cris wanes, as Tilly and Cris work together to help Landry, fragile bonds of companionship and understanding are forged.

Don't expect a happy ending. It's more of a working our way towards happiness ending. I will say that there is hope for Cris, but his penance still isn't over. I don't think true forgiveness is ever in the cards for him. That's the hardest part of the book because he's by far the best human being of the three of them. He's the only one that doesn't put a price tag on his love.

Tilly is a narcissistic character and not like able. For a trained nurse, she lacks empathy. Landry is ruthless, but you can see his devious plan early in the book so his nature is more tolerable. Kris is the 'bad guy' but he's the only one I liked.

Though it is well written, I struggled to relate to this book because I'm not a believer in revenge. But I can see how it can be used to process anger and hurt so that softer, kinder emotions can emerge like early stars in the night sky.

Cardinal Rule Siren Publishing Menage and More edition by Tymber Dalton Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

This book is really crucial to the entire Suncoast series as it is Tilly's story. Highly emotional, incredibly well written and hot enough to singe your e-reader, this is a book to read over and over. Tilly is amazing as is Landry. Chris-well, Chris brings a lot to the story, but he's not quite as amazing. Don't miss this foundation story and five star read.
That is all I felt for the first three fourths of this book. I was so sad for Chris that I skipped a lot of paragraphs where they were treating him like dog poop, but maybe worse. It got better by the last three or four chapters. BDSM, I know can be harsh, but that seemed more sadistic and cruel. Just my opinion. I usually read my books more than once, but this one I wish I could delete. Regardless of what was going on with Landry, I still couldn't find it in me to be to sad for him.
This was one of the first books I bought of Tymber Dalton's and it was awesome! You run the gamut of emotions while reading this book. She sucks you in and makes you feel what the characters are feeling. She makes all of her characters so relatable that you can read and go "I know a person just like that". And while there is never a shortage of erotic scenes in a Tymber Dalton book, its always part of the story and not just word porn. I would recommend this book and all of Tymber's books in this series. I've read most of them twice!
I started this book and was afraid I wasn't going to like it due to the way it was going, but I finally got myself to continue and I ended up loving it. I have to say though it's a little dark in places just as a warning to those of you who would be bothered by that, but it has a HEA.
Carolina's Rules She who will be obeyed!
Tymber Dalton's unique and mastery of bringing a story, characters and a wide range of emotions to life makes her one of the best. You will laugh, feel, sympathize, care, dislike, cry and become emotionally connected to Tymber's stories. They are so true to life only someone who has lived or knows bought these stories in real life can truly write about them as well as she does.
First disclaimer Tymber Dalton is on my auto buy list. I really enjoy her Suncoast Society series and I own (I think) every book in the series. Why? Because the people she writes about aren’t young billionaires or shrinking virgins or some other variation of themes going on in the BDSM genre. They are ordinary people, folks you might pass by on the street and never know they have a “secret” life. They work as lawyers, in construction, web design, and teachers; there's not one hot young billionaire among them (maybe). And they aren’t all under 30. Ages range from early 20’s to 50’s, from newbies to those experienced in the lifestyle. And it’s all believable. And funny, and heart wrenching. People grow and change and have heart ache and still keep going. And since it’s a series, Tymber is very good about giving us glimpses in later books of what is happening in their lives.
Cardinal’s Rule is number 3 in the Suncoast Society series (which numbers, including upcoming books, 58). I did not read the series in order, although my first book was #1. I almost didn’t read it because Tilly really annoyed me in the glimpses I caught of her in other books. I am so glad I decided to take the chance. Tilly is such a complex character. The bad things in her life just seem to set her up for having her Master abandon her in the very beginning of the book. Five years later, Tilly has changed from a submissive to a Domme and is just about ready to open her heart to Bob when Cristo comes back into her life with his Master Landry. This has been called a bittersweet romance, and that’s good description. Tilly’s feelings when she realizes Landry’s slave is her former master, and her working through her revenge feelings to a happier ending tugs at the heart. I ended up wishing I had as good a friend as Tilly.
