I loved the first book in this series, And Hidden Trump is even better. The story is told from the point of view of a former US Army special operations female soldier, although of course there are, allegedly, no females in Special Ops. Of course, there is also, allegedly, no such thing as the variety of supernatural beings in this tale.As a former US Army military intelligence guy myself, one involved in covert operations many years ago, I was impressed with the accuracy of both the tradecraft and weaponry described in the book. Many authors, particularly relatively new ones like Mark Henwick, often get those type of details completely wrong. Somehow, to me, getting facts like that straight adds a sense of realism to the purely fictional information.
I hope the author writes fast, I want the next book NOW!

This story has far too much background information about every little thing. Amber is constantly musing over the past, present and future in such great detail that the story ultimately suffers for it. I found myself skimming multiple pages many times throughout the book just to keep things going. Also, I think the relationship between Jen and Amber is very forced and unnecessary. Again, it just seems like filler. Also Ambers sister and the issue with the Medal of Honor, and the people involved with that really had no place in the story....in the end I gave this book 3 stars because Ambers "main story" is pretty interesting.
Loving the series so far, but a few (personal bias?) details prevent me from giving this a 5th star.
Firstly...while I understand the author wants to offset Amber's supernatural cluelessness with a few scenes of how good she is at what she does, there were way too many false starts, failed ideas, and missed opportunities. Honestly, we don't need to know Amber drove by a house looking for So-and-So and didn't find him. We don't need the details of how she solves a burglary case. While it's (somewhat) refreshing to be shown that Amber isn't completely clueless, the overall plot of the series *is* Amber being clueless and learning to come to terms with her position in a `new' world.
Second, related to the first...okay, we are now aware Amber is smart and competent. Good qualities in a heroine. So...why's she so stupid over the supernatural stuff? Sure, she gets snarky with Skylur about his political stuff, but doesn't press him on important details like...oh, how about what the friggen rules are that he's going to be judged by?
Third, related to the above...we know Amber kicks butt. We know she knows her way around weapons. So why...exactly...is she ssssooooo skeert of Diana and Bian and Skylur and whomever? Why is she not thinking, "Okay, I get out of this room alive, screw it, screw them, I'm getting my Barret .50 and blowing a hole they can drive a truck through right through this guy's chest...from a mile away." After Skylur (and company) basically mind-rape her the first time, I just don't see why she doesn't end them. Instead, she's content to be their chew toy.
Fourth, to tie all these up in a pretty little bow Amber is supposedly a ten year veteran of heavy duty serious black SpecOps...but she doesn't have a warrior's mindset. She's not proactive, solving problems before they become problems; she basically rolls over and plays dead for anyone who steps up to smack her. Sure, it can be argued she's a civilian, she's being watched, blah-blah-blah...but given what we're *told* about her history, mindset, and mentality...she just doesn't *show* it. Bian is especially indicative of this Amber states numerous times that she's never sure which Bian it is...so why hasn't Ms SpecOps categorized Bian as a threat and neutralized her? Err on the side of caution. Why is Amber so willing to take so much crap from everyone?
It's certainly possible this will be addressed in future books; I just finished book 2.
And don't get me started on Kathy. She's a lawyer and a petty vindictive brat, so Amber can't beat the snot out of her every other Wednesday, so she should resign herself to the fact the sister-friend she knew as a kid died a slow painful death. What's walking around calling itself Kathy is nothing and no one Amber needs to bother with.
Ok so we get all the good things from book one continued into book 2. Amber and all that goes with it and he interactions with other characters. We learn more about being a house, athante, weres etc. but still left with ALOT of things that havent been figured out yet.
I was concerned that the book would turn into a cheesy romancy love fest like so many other books with a female lead and supernatural themes. Thankfully thats not the case and it stays in the same vein as book one.
The beginning of the book was frustrating to me as it was filled with Amber holding things back one after another, while in many cases she had reason it was still somewhat annoying. However all of that was wiped out by the end, the book only got better as it got its stride. The ending itself? All i can say without spoiling something is WOW.
So yep id recommend it and yep ill be looking forward to book 3.
I stumbled across the first book earlier this month and have been impatiently waiting for this book's release. I read it practically non-stop. Mark Henwick's world is fascinating, and his protagonist is everything she should be -- strong, smart, vulnerable. For health reasons, I've had a lot of reading time lately, and have immersed myself in the urban fantasy genre. Mark Henwick's novels stand out. He ranks with Patricia Briggs as my two favorites. Both have grounded their series in a plausible situation, with intriguing conflict. And the character development is well done. I highly recommend this new series to those who like good, complex urban fantasy.
I look forward to the next installment. I hope that Mr. Henwick writes fast!
