Gibson has been adjusting to his new job as a Wrecker - part cop, part garbage man, dealing with malfunctioning automatons. But he is beginning to suspect that there is more to these malfunctions than meets the eye.
How is it that some of the malfunctioning automatons seem able to spontaneously learn new skills?
Why did Red Eye, the automaton that nearly killed him, ask such searching, existential questions?
As Gibson and his Wrecker allies ponder a growing surge in cases of automaton 'outliers' - units that begin acting strangely but show no signs of malfunction or external tampering - they stumble across a criminal conspiracy that threatens to change the world as they know it.

Bad Metal 02 Dirty Jobs is the second in an ongoing series of cyberpunk novellas.

Bad Metal 02 Dirty Jobs eBook Robert Black

Dirty Jobs (Bad Metal #2) was a great continuation of Wrecked (Bad Metal #1), picking up right where the first one left off. Highly anticipated after reading #1, this book did not let me down at all. It had the same action and mischief with a little bit of mystery "who-dun-it" mixed in.

The detail of the metal that went bad was good enough that I had a great visual in my head of the way they looked and moved, in my off times from reading my head actually believed it was a movie that I had to get back to. The clash between one city run authority and another made for a good addition; just as FBI vs local police is always fun with the local police going behind the FBI's back and solving the problem. Just like the prequel, there is a lot of violence, destruction, close calls, and crude banter; everything that made the first one so great.

I recommend reading the first book first and then directly following it with this one. Read together it flows nicely and doesn't leave you disappointed that there is not more. That being said, I will be a "day one" purchaser of Bad Metal #3 if there is one coming!

Bad Metal 02 Dirty Jobs eBook Robert Black Reviews

Well written fast paced addictive series. Good plot arc and fresh take on the AI genre. Only bad parts in this series so far are how quickly I read through the books and the amount of time I have to wait to see what happens in the next book.
Plot line continues to move swiftly in BM2. Again, a few editing errors, but the author has been contacted and promises corrections to the digital format.

World development proceeds to take shape and leaves the reader with a firm grasp of the story's setting but eager to read more about post-Crash environment and society.

Breezed through this novella as well as the first. Eagerly awaiting the third. Hint, hint, Mr. Black. Please don't pull a George R. R. Martin on us...
The first book was good, a little rough around the edges but the characters, their dynamics and dialogue, and the world were more than enough to keep me reading. This one is great -- the author's style and skill has improved, the dialogue is stronger, the politics and conspiracies and action are exciting, and well planned, and seeing all the ways automations can go haywire and the Wreckers can stop them, is great.
Well worth the read, I'm looking forward to the next one.
Good book
I came across Bad Metal by chance and immediately fell in love with the characters and the violent action. Very nice world-building. I enjoy participating in the world the author has created and I came here to buy another episode of fun and RB has not issued BM03 yet! I mean what is up with that? Makes me want to get a sledge hammer with a percussion cartridge in it and do serious damage to some bad metal. Good show RB and keep up the good work.
This second installment shows little development in the author's writing. The story was ok and considering the first book was free, I don't feel cheated on the total length of the two combined. If the first story had been 2.99 I probably would have purchased the second but definitely not a third. The writing is not that good. Like the first story, the main character (the new guy) is doing a very difficult job (in his first two weeks) better than the seasoned veterans and the remaining primary characters still have no depth.

There is a great potential for this to develop into a more intriguing story but the author seem stuck on pouring all his energy into Gibson (the new guy). The two stories cover about three weeks in Gibson's life. The author could have spent some of that time on the world and the characters instead of back to back missions.
I agree with another reviewer of this book that it's too short. But that's my only complaint about it and it's a weak one, since these novellas are so reasonably priced. You could easily spend 3 bucks on a much worse read.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Dirty Jobs (#2) is the equal of Wrecked (#1) with no change in the writing style. Same punchy dialog, same good plotting, same good characterization. Black even manages to give some of his automatons a bit of personality.

I was also pleased to see that most of the grammatical faux pas that piqued me in Wrecked were missing in Dirty Jobs.

All around, this book and its predecessor have established some interesting characters in an interesting setting and I'm eager to read more about them.

(Full disclosure I know the author's father and he told me about this book. But I don't know the author himself. You'll have to settle for my assurance that this is an impartial review.)
