Desi Bascomb is a fifteen-year-old living in boring Sproutsville, Idaho and working at Pets Charming. Instead of playing with cute puppies or kittens all day, Desi dresses up in a groundhog costume to help promote the store. Her work look doesn't exactly help her social standing which has taken a tumble since a particularly interesting falling out with her ex-BFF Celeste (read to find out about it).

Desi's just hoping for something to make her life more like Audrey Hepburn movie when she spies an interesting ad in the newspaper. Suddenly there's someone else in her bathroom. Desi's relaxing bubble bath is less relaxing and more confusing when Meredith, her green haired godmother of sorts shows up with some news. Turns out Desi has an ability that--with a little help--allows her to be a substitute for princesses who need a little break.

Soon, Desi's filling in for royal girls around the world and finding out that there's more to it than the fancy dresses and glamour that she expected.

The first installment in Linsdey Leavitt's new series is a whole lot of fun. Desi is a great main character who really is like no other character I can think of--but also not so different that it's annoying or weird. She's a quirky girl who doesn't like being like everyone else or following all of the rules, but still worries about how her social life. She's very well developed and it's her unique traits that really make her able to be a main character that is temporarily pretending to be other characters. The same is true of Meredith, as well and I really look forward to learning more about them in future books.

While Princess for Hire is a book that could almost be read by middle grade readers (it reads easily like that and doesn't contain the language or sex that would be a problem) it also works extremely well for the target YA readers and even adult readers.

There were times when some of the princesses' lives seemed almost. . . simply imagined, but I think it actually worked the longer I thought about it. What Desi did each time and how things worked for her, etc seemed to be the focus and everything was written very well for that.

Princess for Hire was not a very complicated book but it was super, super fun and cute and it was also one I found myself thinking about after it was over--which I always find to be an indicator of a great book (at least when they're good thoughts which these were!).

I definitely can't wait for more of the Princess for Hire books or from Lindsey Leavitt.

Princess for Hire A Princess for Hire Book Lindsey Leavitt Books Reviews

I enjoyed this novel a ton. although bread it with in three days despite the fact that I was bored out of my mind. this was probably one of the best novels I've ever read. I'm looking forward to reading this next book in the series today.
Such a cute story! The author took something as common as a princess story and made it something new. Everyone can relate to Desi on some level. I also found the plot and world created to be imaginative and yet just believable enough to keep me entertained. Great read.
This book was a pleasant change from all the YA I've been reading lately. Saying this, it wasn't what I had expected. This was a quirky, funny, read about a young girl who is struggling with her 13-year-old self. What girl can't relate to that? Desi is unhappy with just about everything in her life... school, her job, her family and friends. Then she stumbles across an ad for a substitute princess. She gets the job which is the start of several (mis)adventures in which she tries to help or impact the princess' lives. In doing so, she learns several important life lessons and realizes that even princesses have things that they want to escape from. Desi has a good heart and a her desire to do good totally won me over. This is a wonderful book for tweens, but can be enjoyed by young and old. Can't wait for Book II.
Desi makes a wish she wants to make an impact. An Audrey-Hepburn-in-a-movie kind of impact. And being as gorgeous as Audrey wouldn't hurt either. But she didn't expect her wish to be answered by a sort of technologically advanced fairy godmother with crazy-colored hair who offers her a chance to be a stand-in princess. Basically, when Desi applies a magical rouge to her cheeks, she takes on the appearance of any princess who has applied for her help. No problem, right? Oh, come on, you're intelligent readers of course there's a problem. But I'm not going to tell you.
What I will tell you is that Princess for Hire was funny, cute, wonderfully readable and enjoyable, and that I can't wait for it to be made into a movie. More specifically, the main character was exceptionally well-created and believable, every scene was very visual, and the structure was excellent. I know it seems weird to make a point of the structure, but seriously, it stood out as well done. My one complaint--or perhaps just a pet peeve--is the openness of the ending. I'm kinda picky in that I like everything wrapped up, tied with a bow, with a gift tag on the side...you get the idea. That said, this is the first in a series...and it's a series that I will definitely be following.
I thought the title of this book was really catchy and the concept/world-building was quite clever. I was on the fence with the writing style, read the sample and decided to buy it. Glad I did! I really got into it around chapter two. She had the most interesting way to bring in the fantasy portion of the story that I've ever seen. D Bravo! Just when I thought there were no unique ways left to bring magic into the real world.

Ms. Leavitt kept me up way past my bedtime, that night. A whole extra hour.

Desi is a very sympathetic character. She learns that the girls who she represents are not happy people, even if they are princesses and have lots of money. They have problems. She wants to make a difference in the lives of these girls she personifies despite it being against the rules of the company that she works for. And along the way she finds out the hard way that people can often surprise you. A very good message our girls need to hear.

The only section I didn't like was the trial section. I thought it actually dragged down the narrative and the same point could have been made another way. But, the end of the book was adorable and the writing on the rest was very good and entertaining.

I had to put it down to go to bed once. The rest I finished in one sitting. )

Very good book, will recommend it to a good friend I know who is looking for books for her daughter. )
