Brook Ridge Falls favorite bakery owner, Lexy Baker, has everything she ever wanted. A new husband she adores. A thriving bakery business. Everything is going great.

... Until a new bakery springs up across the street and tries every trick in the book to put her out of business!

Lexy smells something rotten about the bakery and it isn’t just their stale brownies. When her own bakery is broken into she knows who did it ... but what she can’t figure out is why.

Could the new baker be after her great-grandmothers prize winning scone recipe, or is there another more sinister reason?

Meanwhile ...

A grizzly discovery in the sewer system sends her and her gang of iPad toting grandmas off to solve a decades old crime under the streets of brook ridge falls.

Could a seventy year old crime be related to the new bakery?

Scones Skulls Scams Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series Book 8 edition by Leighann Dobbs Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

And she steps right back into trouble! Of course, it doesn't help that her grandmother and friends are willing to tackle anything, even search the town's sewers after a very old skull is found.

I really enjoy the Lexy series, and Scones, Skulls & Scams didn't disappoint. I especially liked the way the rivalry between Lexy and the new baker, who moved in across the street, played out. I'd say more, but I'm afraid I'd spoil the story for you. Suffice it to say, if you're a Lexy Baker fan, you're gonna love this book.

Scones Skulls Scams Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series Book 8 edition by Leighann Dobbs Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This book is another example of Leighann Dobbs' story telling abilities. You devour it from start to end almost non-stop.

But...

She talks about scones all the way through the book, finally telling how Lexy added almonds to the recipe and won.

I rarely eat cakes, and I might be baking once a year at most. But I could almost smell and taste those scones from her description.

And I was so looking forward to read the recipe at the end of the book. Nope, not this time.

Well, I forgive Leighann, because I just love her books, and this one is no exception.
This is the perfect summer mystery read. It's hard to tell about a mystery without giving it away. It involves a lady having trouble with her bakery. Even though her sweets are very good things keep happening that cause her trouble. She has four vintage ladies on her side, however. They also have a hobby. Detective work. They do pretty good, too. Things get pretty scary when they try to solve a murder from 1948. And why did a rival bakery move in right across the street? What's going on? Good read for younger readers, too. This would be a good TV series involving the vintage ladies solving mysteries. I think I'll read another.
super light reading.formulistic with characterization exceeding plot ,nor is plot germaine. one gets the impression that the author's sole intent is to entertain without any intent of pretentiousness.writing the book, perhaps, took the same amount of time as reading it- after book was fleshed out.a negative review?not at al!.i often prefer a super light book following a heavy and demanding reading.this fits the bill.chocolates and naps and a lazy afternoon.
When Lexy Baker-Perillo returns from her honeymoon after her marriage to police detective, Jack Perillo, she discovers the New bakery across the street has opened for business.
Lexy and her assistant manager, Cassie, discover grocery store boxes in the dumpster behind the New bakery, they feel the owner, Caraleigh Brewster is up to no good.
A gold-toothed skull found during sewer renovations in front of the bakeries, leads Lexy and her grandmother's three friends to the story in some old 1948 newspapers about a robbery where the loot had not been found.
This leads all of them to the sewer tunnels below the streets of Brook Ridge Falls. What follows is the suspense in another of Leighann Dobbs cozy mysteries.
Lexy is back and now a married woman, having just returned from her honeymoon. When she returns she discovers a new bakery across the street has popped up and the new bakery is eerily similar to Lexy's and trying to do everything to put Lexy out of business.
As if that isn't enough, Lexy's bakery is broken into but nothing is taken, or is it?

In other news a skull is found in the sewer construction right outside of Lexy's bakery and Nans and crew are off to solve a 70 year old case which is right under (literally in the sewer) their noses.

Leighann Dobbs does it again with another GREAT Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery! You will fall in love with the characters and their antics !
I've read the previous books in the Lexy Baker series prior to reading "Scones, Skulls, & Scams." This has been my least favorite book in the series. The story itself seemed a bit scattered. I wasn't a fan of Caraleigh. There was mention of Caraleigh's brother, Harvey, but he had very little (practically no) involvement in the story. Each book in the series has been light, cute, and a super quick read. I would call the series "mind candy" - no blood or gore, no heavy thinking, no crazy twists, just silly and fun sleuthing. The story is far fetched, predictable, and a little corny, but that's what makes it fun. Nans and her geriatric pose's always add a bit of silliness and fun to each story. This is a great series if you are looking for a quick read while you are on the go, a day at the beach, a rainy weekend, any time you just need a fun light story.
Lexi Baker is newly married to her detective husband from earlier in the series, Jack Perillo. Her bakery is experiencing difficulties on all sides...literally construction on the sidewalk in front is keep customers away and a competitor has opened shop right across the street, drawing those customers in with sales galore! In the meantime, the construction crew dig up a skull from the tunnels under the street. How old is it? Who is it? Of course Lexi and Nan and her crew must investigate, much to the chagrin of Perillo. Lexi appears to be of the "what he doesn't know won't hurt him" mindset with regard to her new husband...not the best way to kick off their marriage, but I think that's how those two roll.
Predictable, quick read, but okay nonetheless. I think the author likes writing the whodunnits on a kindergarten level, as with "Killer Cupcakes" & "Dying For Danish." If you go into the book with that in mind, you won't set the bar too high and be disappointed. Also, some of it's on the far side of extreme...Nan and her elderly friends are crawling around in the sewer pipes underground. Really?
And she steps right back into trouble! Of course, it doesn't help that her grandmother and friends are willing to tackle anything, even search the town's sewers after a very old skull is found.

I really enjoy the Lexy series, and Scones, Skulls & Scams didn't disappoint. I especially liked the way the rivalry between Lexy and the new baker, who moved in across the street, played out. I'd say more, but I'm afraid I'd spoil the story for you. Suffice it to say, if you're a Lexy Baker fan, you're gonna love this book.
