I just checked to see when I bought this book and was surprised to see it was almost three years ago. It's taken me that long to actually start to read it. I must have known that it wasn't going to be my cup of tea. That being said, I did read it all ,which is half the battle because if I can't get into a book, I'm not going to finish it.It has a good idea or at least a familiar idea. Supreme bad ass vamp falls for young vampire hunter. There's the requisite love triangle and the girl fighting her feelings against said supreme bad ass vamp. I always have an issue with stories like this because I just don't buy that after 1600 years that the vamp would find the 20 year old heroine so interesting. He wouldn't.He'd be bored silly. At least they attempt to make her a little special but it just comes off as whiny.
I found the main character to be unrelatable. She spends more time wanting to do the vampire then being scared, and this is before she got to "know Him". Her mom was killed by a vampire, she was raised hunting vampires. But yet almost instantly she is fantasizing about this vampire. Also when she experiences a major personal loss late in the book, it's hardly touched on. For being an Empath, all she really seems is horny lol
As the story moved on, I got more interested. I just wish something, ANYTHING would have happened.
I don't like prolonged love triangles and I wish they would speed that up to a resolution. I found myself reading this book in a few hours and I'm going to purchase the 2nd one, so it had SOMETHING I liked, I just hope that book #2 is better.
I realize this review is all over the place and I guess that's how I feel about the book. I can list all these things I didn't like about it but yet at the end of the day I really want to read book 2. Mystifying :)

Love is Darkness Valerie Dearborn Book 1 edition by Caroline Hanson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The 1st time I read this book I wasn't on Goodreads yet (thus my previous lack of review) I just got done re-reading it (in preparation of Love is Mortal this week YAY Im re-reading both books + Jacks story) I almost forgot how much I loved this book!! Fast-paced plot loaded with mystery, suspense, action, deception, lots of Drama & chock full of interesting characters.
Valerie is a takes-no-crap spitfire who doesn't know when to shut up, even when her life depends on it. She knows what she wants in life & she goes for it at all costs (though life still doesn't always go how she wants no matter what she does) and shes been in love with Jack for as long as she can remember.
Now Jack, he is a hott-mess. Hott & Italian (dangerous combination) Hell-bent on revenge with no thoughts of the consequences or his future. Loyal to a fault. His & Val's relationship is strained to say the least.
The focus of his revenge Marion is just all kinds of crazy. She is sadistic & cruel with a huge dollop of plain old nuts. Everything you fear in a villain.
Now lets talk about Lucas....... ahhh Lucas *swoon, pant & drool - insert goofy grin here* he is the baddest of all baddies, the King of all Vampires & he has his sights set on Val for reasons only he knows & wont share. The chemistry between these two is off the charts!! And it doesn't help her that he is Dangerously Gorgeous & Sexy as Hell!!
This book will wind you up, throw you around & than spit you out leaving you breathless & screaming in frustration at the end (can you say cliffhanger?!?) When I first read this I think I actually screamed out loud cause I had to wait to find out what happened. This time I'm off to jump right on Love is Fear =) xx
Vampires are not really that much my thing, but the blurb looked interesting enough for me to pick this one up. Big mistake.
322 pages mainly filled with a female character whining about if she'd shack up with her sort-of-brother or a 1600 year old vampire king, does not a story make. Seriously, that's what this book was mostly about. There was no story, no plot, no character growth, no point. And hopefully soon, for me, no memory that I ever read this thing.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, not even if you can buy it for almost nothing, not even if you're completely into vampire stories or the more graphic sex scenes (well, auto-orgasm scenes in this case).
This book definitely has potential. The author is committed to the mythology and has her own spin on the supernatural universe. The writing is good with a couple of places where it does look like there was a conversion issue or two with the text. However, I tend to agree with the other reviewers who say that the main character Val isn't all that likeable. She comes off as very immature and indecisive which may be to create tension but just comes off as really annoying. The plot also uses very common themes that paranormal readers have seen done over and over again i.e., the love triangle angle, secret talent she's unaware of her whole life, and the forever frustrating will they/won't they (over and over again) moments. Will probably skip the rest of the series since it seems like the main character gets even more indecisive and whiny. Was hoping for the opposite.
